Martin Margiela 
at Hermès (1997-2003)

In the 1990s, Martin Margiela emerged as an avant-garde and pioneering creative fashion iconoclast. Interpret the essential components of the garments to create a geometric eyewear frame
Martin’s work for Hermès, in
particular, represents remarkably timeless design. I've sought out which
details contribute to creating minimal lines through his pieces. Crafting a
solid frame from fabric details required a deep understanding of the fabric
material's characteristics due to the polar opposite of traits. Therefore, I
focused on the process of devising a meticulous approach, starting with
identifying the cloth's structural correlation. Exploring various
garments, including patterns and materials, led me to establish two design
languages for eyewear: fluid flow and deformable structure.

Continuous lines highlight a broad spectrum of comfortable silhouettes and refined volume.

When it comes to deep V-necks, the
edge and flow of surfaces transform naturally. It creates a sense of extreme
simplicity, but it is in visible form.

A bellpendant is designed to optimize the interplay between illumination and shade.
Precisely tailored to serve distinct lighting functions, the dual flow of the
Bell pendant optimizes both upward and downward illumination. The elevated
structure of the upper flow creates an extended shadow, adding a sense of
volume, while the downward light strategically fosters spatial depth through
focused illumination.

	1. Structural solution


I developed the joining structure to
get an even scattering of warm white light. I placed a transparent acrylic
sheet shaped like a screw between the dual parts to achieve an even scattering
of warm white light.


2. Finish color


I explored a hospitable housing color
to improve a sense of warm white light. In observing the emotional connection
between the housing color and the warm white light, I discovered that white
housing tends to absorb a significant portion of the light spectrum, especially
in the transition from white to warm white, resulting in a diminished dimming
effect. Consequently, I selected the yellowish-white hue, which
displays a vibrant range of light.

Korean Traditional Aesthetic Characteristics:

Genesis interprets the Korean traditional aesthetic in its design language for crafting automobiles. The brand is establishing a CMF (Color, Material, Finish) library within the Genesis Studio, allowing customers to experience the simplicity and elegance of its materials. Reflecting on the values pursued, I contemplated the context of the CMF wall from an architectural perspective. Inspired by the simple lines and proportional aesthetics of Hanok (traditional Korean architecture), I defined the space concept as a 'Koreanness grid.'

Developed the initial stage of an adaptive structure

The GENESIS CMF library involved
materials for both the vehicle's exterior and interior, including leather,
metal, plastic, and wood. Each category is further divided into various texture
and color variations. To provide customers with delicate material
experiences, I focused on developing new forms and structures for the CMF
sample.

Final design development:
Personally, organizing over 120 CMF samples
and arranging them neatly within a narrow space was a highly complicated
process. To make a perfect fit for the samples on the wall, I
meticulously calculated angles and lengths, comparing each type of 2D design
drawing. This process was crucial for adjusting a balanced layout. I developed
final drawings and models, consistently printing them on a 1-to-1 scale to
verify both balance and safety for use.
